LSE Green Skills Lab

Evidence on jobs and skills in the low‑carbon transition.

An interdisciplinary lab at LSE combining economics, data science, political economy and sociology to build the evidence base on how the green transition is changing work, skills, and opportunity.

Research

Three pillars

A shared focus on measurement, firm behaviour, and regional adjustment.

Green skills measurement

We develop harmonised definitions and indicators for green jobs and skills, enabling comparison across countries and over time.

Firms’ green skills demand

We leverage large online job vacancies and patents datasets to measure how firms’ skill needs are changing, and where shortages are most acute.

Social equity and regional development

We study how the green transition plays out across places—tracking winners, losers, wages and mobility at local level.

Outputs

Planned outputs

Open, replicable indicators

Metrics designed to be transparent and easy to reuse in research and policy analysis.

Annual Green Jobs Report

A planned yearly snapshot of demand, skills and regional patterns across the UK, EU, US and South Asia.

Network & convening

Workshops and a regular seminar series to connect researchers working on labour markets and decarbonisation.

Get involved

Working with the Lab

We work with researchers, policymakers and practitioners who want credible evidence on how decarbonisation reshapes labour markets. Typical collaborations include: co‑authored research, policy briefings, and applied work on data definitions and measurement.

Seminar series

We are developing an online seminar series held every month. Details will be posted on the Events page.
